Entries from June 2005

It’s good to see that more and more people find a job as a professional barista.
A lot of competitors out of the DBC (Dutch Barista championships) are working in the espresso business now.
Our latte art champ Michel Buis is a coffee trainer for a small but real nice roaster called ALGRA.
Moniek (competed in 3 Dutch finals) works as a barista trainer (and more) for MobiCcino. www.mobiccino.com
They have a few beautiful Piaggio APE 3-wheel scooters from Italy and transformed them to mobile espresso bars. With their La Marzocco and Mirage machines completed with the Mahlkonig grinders are they the perfect solution for events and parties.

I was searching a for a long time to find a nice new bicycle.
And of course you can buy one on every corner of the street,
But I was searching for more than ‘just’ a regular bike.
I was looking for a ‘Barista Bike’!
Not a mountain bike, no city bike and definitely no race bike.
When I was in Amsterdam lately, I saw him. And I new it from the first second, this is my Barista Bike. It’s relaxed, rock and roll, sturdy, hi quality and a little bit robusta!
Do you like it? Or have you seen better ‘Barista Bikes’?

Working as a barista, I often meet people with a lot of knowledge about espresso. At least, that’s how they present their self.
The way they talk about it and the self-confidence they have, can make me feel very uncomfortable.
But do they tell the truth? Is there a truth in the world of espresso?
Some things are proven, but there are many many things discussable!
In a very good post on his Weblog www.godshot.blogspot.com Chris (Malachi / Godshot) wrote his story.
I will recommend you to read this, because it is exactly what I go through every day.
Ofcourse, we often meet people with some knowledge. And sometimes they like to share their knowledge with us. Those are the goody’s in the business. Because sharing knowledge is the only way to make us better and make new baristi enthousiastic!
Enjoy the weekend, Jeroen

My friend and colleague Louis Claus mailed me these pictures.
Louis is owner of de Blonde Pater (The Blond Father) a beautiful outlet in Nijmegen in the east of the Netherlands.
He was also the first Dutch barista finalist ever. Although he did not win that final (sorry Louis J ) He impressed because he did latte art, And in those years he was the only one in the Netherlands.
The pictures are taken on a big dance festival in Nijmegen.(12.000 people) Louis made the coffee on this festival. I hope this will be a new norm. Good music, good atmosphere and good espresso made on good machines by good baristi!
I often tell about my experience in beautiful Oslo. We visited a club called Uncle Donald.
Good atmosphere, good music, good drinks and beautiful people.
But the best of all was the espresso bar.
I had never seen this in the Netherlands. A Espressobar in a trendy club!
I also remember that the espresso was very bad, and made by somebody without any spore of passion. But the is initiative perfect.

Last week i had the change to do a presentation in Living Tomorrow.
Living Tomorrow (also known as the house of the future)
Is a modern building in Amsterdam.
Its sponsored by a lot of companys like Hewlett Packard, Philips and
Sara Lee, Douwe Egberts. They show their future products there.
During the participants meeting they gave us (Douwe Egberts) the change to talk about
our company. And because it is the house of the future, my presentation was about the coffee of the future.
But what can you say about coffee of the future?
I talked about quality, passion, tradition, technical skills etc.
Of course I showed the audience how we, baristi prepare our espresso and lattes.
Everybody was very enthusiastic. Most of people never drunk an espresso or cappuccino like that before.
So all I did was talking about the traditional way of making espresso with an espresso machine.
But for most people this is still future coffee

We are six weeks later now, and look what happens?
After 5 weeks I decided to putt the beans up the ground,
And not in the ground. Now they are growing much better.
The roots are getting bigger and stronger. And now they push the bean up.
Im very exited because people told me that I needed a lot of luck to let grow a coffee plant with success.
To be continued

Wow, this is rock & roll.
After I posted the airstreamer on my bog, I received several links and reactions about this beauty.
This is a beautiful 1947 Spartan with the one and only Mirage as a beating heart.
You can find this duo on the campus of the Cornell University in Ithaca USA.
It’s owned by Gimme! Coffee. www.gimmecoffee.typepad.com
